PennDOT to Replace Burnt Mill Road Bridge in Kennett Township, Chester
County
9/23/2016-KING OF PRUSSIA
Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, September 26, to replace the
Burnt
Mill Road bridge over a branch of the Red Clay Creek in Kennett Township,
Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT)
today
announced. The bridge was closed on April 25, 2014, after a bridge
inspection
determined that the steel beams had deteriorated beyond the point where it
could no longer carry vehicular traffic safely.
During construction, Burnt Mill Road through traffic will continue to be
detoured over Norway Road (township road) and Spring Mill Road. Local
access is
being maintained up to the construction zone. Motorists are advised to
allow
extra time when traveling through the area.
Over the next three months, PennDOT will construct a single-span,
reinforcement
concrete rigid frame bridge. The new structure will be 27 feet wide and 25
feet
long. It will have two 9-foot travel lanes and two 2-foot shoulders.
The existing one-span, steel I-beam bridge was built in 1935 and redecked
in
1979. It was posted with a 12-ton weight limit at the time of the closure.
The
one-lane bridge is 22 feet long and 16 feet wide. It carried 524 vehicles a
day.
