PennDOT Opens New Burnt Mill Road Bridge in Kennett Township, Chester
County

1/13/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) this morning opened
the
new bridge on Burnt Mill Road over a branch of the Red Clay Creek in
Kennett
Township, Chester County.

Construction began in September 2016 to construct a new single-span,
reinforced
concrete rigid frame bridge. The new structure is 27 feet wide and 25 feet
long. It has two nine-foot travel lanes and two 2-foot shoulders.

The previous bridge was closed on April 25, 2014, after an inspection
determined that the steel beams had deteriorated beyond the point where it
could no longer carry vehicular traffic safely. The bridge carried 524
vehicles
a day when it closed.

The construction of the new Burnt Mill Road bridge was part of PennDOT's
$6.6
million project to rehabilitate four structurally-deficient bridges in
Chester,
Delaware and Montgomery counties, The cost to replace the Burnt Mill Road
bridge was approximately $700,000.

All work on the multi-bridge project is scheduled to be completed in late
2018.
The general contractor is J.D. Eckman Inc. of Atglen, Chester County. This
transportation improvement project is financed with 100 percent state
funds.
