PennDOT to Rehabilitate JFK Boulevard Bridges in Philadelphia

PennDOT to Rehabilitate JFK Boulevard Bridges in Philadelphia

1/10/2017-KING OF PRUSSIA

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will start
construction
Friday, January 20, on a $15.8 million project to rehabilitate three
structurally deficient bridges on John F. Kennedy (JFK) Boulevard over
21st,
22nd and 23rd streets in Philadelphia.

Construction on the JFK Boulevard bridges will be performed one half at a
time
as the department's contractor replaces the deteriorated deck and beams on
the
three structurally-deficient, prestressed adjacent box-beam bridges. The
deteriorated bridge decks have been in place since the late 1950s.

Beginning 6:30 PM Friday, January 20, eastbound and westbound JFK Boulevard

will be closed and detoured between 20th Street and Schuylkill Avenue to
establish a new construction traffic pattern. The westbound lanes will
reopen
by 6:00 AM Monday, January 23. The eastbound lanes will remain closed
through
the completion of construction scheduled for August 2018.

During construction, JFK Boulevard motorists will be detoured over
Schuylkill
Avenue, 30th Street, Market Street and 20th Street

In addition to replacing the bridge deck, crews will reconstruct JFK
Boulevard
from the eastern end of the bridge over the Schuylkill River to just east
of
21st Street, and widen the sidewalk on the south side to match the sidewalk

built on the JFK Boulevard bridge over the Schuylkill River.

Crews will also build a new center median; reconstruct the westbound
sidewalk
on JFK Boulevard to allow for a future multi-use trail; construct a
pedestrian
stairway and ramp from the westbound sidewalk to 22nd Street; and install
new
drainage, pavement markings and highway lighting.

Following the completion of construction, the eastbound single-lane pattern
on
JFK Boulevard will be extended from the bridge over the Schuylkill River to

just east of 21st Street.

C. Abbonizio Contractors, Inc., of Sewell, NJ, is the general contractor on
the
$15,884,978 project which is financed with 100 percent state funds.

This project is a follow up to the structural improvements made from 2007
to
2009 when PennDOT rehabilitated the JFK Boulevard bridge over the
Schuylkill
River under a $17.9 million project.
